Conceptual roof design

The future vision of the Skatium is a year-round, multi-function open-air facility that will support recreational sports, concerts, markets, and a myriad of other activities based on community needs.

A refrigerated concrete surface and a roof will enable Skatium to remain open with ice for up to five months. In other seasons, they will enable a multitude of other sports and events to be held, even in the rain. The plan includes all new buildings including a new office and rental area, locker rooms, bathrooms, and utility and storage.

Our phased plan â€‹â€‹maximizes our ability to provide a skatable surface for winter use while we raise the funds necessary to fully realize this vision.

Phase 1 - Maximize ice time

This phase installs a temporary EZ Ice rink which can be assembled and disassembled as we progress through future phases. With dasher boards and a poly liner, we will be able to retain water through winter thaws and estimate being able to open at least three to five times as many days as past winters. In this phase we will also complete the engineering design and permitting necessary to proceed to later phases.

  • Soil analysis ($19,000) completed

  • Demolition and burn of existing dasher boards

  • Purchase and assembly of EZ rink ($44,000)

  • Engineering design and Permitting ($76,000)*

Total Estimate: $139,000

*This is an estimate. We are waiting to hear from the engineering firm on the exact cost.

Phase 2 - Laying the foundation

Our soil analysis revealed a clay and sand surface with no bedrock even at a depth of 80ft. This means we must bring in hundreds of cubic yards of material to build a foundation to support a roof and refrigerated slab that will not crack.

  • Once site work is complete, we will re-assemble the EZ-ice rink for skating.

  • Demolition and removal of existing structures ($14K)

  • Build gravel/stone site foundation ($628K)

  • Concrete foundation for roof ($51K)

  • Construct new office/rental/bathrooms building ($250K)*

  • Construct new utility and storage buildings ($100K)

  • Move and reset existing power and lighting ($40K)

Total Estimate: $1.1M

*Costs may be reduced through community volunteers. Intent is to tie into the Waitsfield wastewater system

Phase 3 - A longer skating season + solar

A roof structure will be built that balances aesthetics and functionality to protect the ice from sun and snow as well as support a solar array. We are discussing a partnership with a community solar organization to offset the costs of the roof and solar array installation, and intend to utilize the energy to reduce or eliminate our electric costs from our operating budget. â€‹â€‹

Once all construction is complete, our team will re-assemble the EZ-ice rink for skating until we raise enough money for Phase 4.

  • Laminated wood beam roof ($1.2M)

  • Community Solar Project ($50K)*

  • New sound and lighting ($117K)

Total Estimate: $1.37M

*Our buy-in share of the community solar project. The project team will install panels without cost to SKATIUM

Phase 4 - Year-round activity

We will purchase and install a refrigeration system and embed the refrigeration tubes in a concrete pad. With a solid, smooth concrete surface under the roof and ability to roll out turf, this phase completes the vision of a facility that can support year-round usage.

  • Concrete slab, rebar, piping, header trench and apron ($700K)

  • Refrigeration system ($500K)

  • Aluminum Dasher Boards ($250K)

  • Astro Turf ($48K)

Total Estimate: $1.5M
